"Its hard to believe I'd be the first person to say these things to you" Mike told her, assuming that she was just being modest. She was a very grounded, probably wouldnt be the type to brag about all the guys hitting on her. "I'm not used to this at all...and you havent made a fool of yourself at all" He assured her.
After he had stopped the elevator he studied her reaction. Waiting for a scream, or a slap in the face, or even just a look of disgust but she was actually glad he did it? She didnt want to change her mind. "Really? You still do? You dont need to say this just because I kinda just trapped you in here" Mike said with a small smile. "I'll step away from the buttons" He told her doing so, unable to believe she seemed to be sharing his excitement.
"I would really love to have coffee with you" Mike told her, trying to become more articulate than the rambling idiot he had been earlier. "I have been trying to get the courage to ask you pretty much this whole time..."

"You are, and its very kind of you to say these things..." She has never felt as flattered as she did every time he complimented her. She was still surprised to hear that he wasn't used to women flirting with him. Maybe they weren't as obvious as she was being. Or he just didn't talk about it, he seemed more decent than one of those guys who talks about all the women who have hit on them. "I still find that so hard to believe," she told him, hoping it didn't sound like she was calling him a liar. She was relieved when he assured her that she didn't make a fool of herself. "I think I did ever since I started rambling, but I appreciate you saying that."
When he continued to say that he would love to have coffee, and that he had been trying to build up the courage to ask her, she smiled. "Really?" Or was he just saying that because he was too polite to say no? "This whole time, I was trying to make sure you didn't think I was crazy, but it seemed the harder I tried, the more insane I looked." She could barley even remember what she had said...she just knew how much she had embarrassed herself. "And I'm not sure if I've achieved that yet, but um...coffee would be nice. I guess I just blurted out asking you because time was running out...since we had almost reached our destination...I hope you don't feel like you have to say yes because you don't want to offend me. I won't be offended if you really don't want to..." Here she was, rambling again.

"I'm not sure why it'd be that hard to believe, especially after I hijacked our elevator like a creep" Mike told her still feeling guilty about stopping the elevator like he did. "I promise you havent been rambling or making a fool of yourself, I've been doing enough of those for the both of us"
Mike nodded when she asked him if he was really working up the courage to ask her. He felt stupid for not having said something earlier, now he probably just looked like the coward who couldnt even ask her out for coffee. "I never thought you were crazy, I thought you'd think I was...and I'm not just saying yes so I dont offend you...I really would like to...unless you would rather not, which wouldnt offend me either"

Natalie couldn't help but laugh a bit. "You aren't a creep. Like I said, I am glad that you did that. I don't think you are the least bit creepy." She was relieved when he said that he didn't think she was rambling or making a fool of herself, although she knew that she must have looked at least a little silly. "No, you haven't been doing either of those things either. I guess...we're both just not used to doing this kind of thing," she said with a shy smile.
"Thank you for not thinking I was crazy...I wouldn't have thought you were either. I would...I would love to go out for coffee sometime. If I really didn't, I wouldn't have suggested it. I do understand if you don't want to...although, since we both assured each other that we do, maybe we should stop doubting ourselves so much," she said with a small laugh, trying to eliminate some of the uncertainty they were both feeling.

"I guess you're right about that, I'm definitely not used to doing this kind of thing" Mike told her then probably realizing what a loser he sounded like, unable to even ask a woman out for coffee. He thought he was making a horrible first impression and figured as soon as she left she'd realize what a mistake she had made.
Mike laughed at her next comment about them doubting themselves. "I think you're right, I should stop trying to make sure you're not having any doubts before I talk you out of that cup of coffee"

She was a little relieved to hear that he wasn't used to doing this sort of thing. It comforted her to know that he didn't just pick up women every chance he got, even though she still found it hard to believe that he didn't get hit on more. "Makes two of us...and gives a logical explanation for why it took so long for one of us to ask," she said smiling, feeling more and more at ease.
She laughed when he said that. "You couldn't do that...it took me this long to ask you...I don't think you could say anything to talk me out of it, unless it was something you really didn't want. But you assured me that you did, so I am going to take your word for it."

Mike laughed again as she told him that them both being not used to doing this type of thing explained why it took them both so long to ask the other one out for a cup of coffee. "That is a good was to explain our mutual problem in that area. I'm glad we ended up able to work it out though" He told her with a smile, grateful that things had worked out and she brought it up even if he didnt have the courage to yet.
Mike smiled again as she told him that she couldnt be talked out of having that cup of coffee unless it was something he didnt want to do. "I'm glad to hear that" He told her. "When do you think you might be free to get some coffee?" He asked her still nervous about it.

"Me too," she said smiling shyly when he said that he was glad they were able to work it out. "Things worked out for the best...it was definitely worth the wait," she added. That part was true. She didn't mind waiting, if it meant they were going to be able to go out for that cup of coffee. But now that it was confirmed, she realized how impatient she had been. If she was patient, she wouldn't have blurted asking him out.
She paused, thinking about when would be a good time. She was off around 9 tonight, but she didn't want to suggest coffee that late, in case he misinterpreted her as to what she had meant by 'coffee'. "Anytime really...did you want to go for lunch break...or something in the morning?" She really wasn't sure, so hoped he wouldn't get confused by the options she was suggesting.

"I completely agree about it being worth the wait" Mike told her with a smile. He did feel a little guilty that he wasnt able to work up the courage to ask her first. He hoped that not being able to ask her didnt make him seem any less masculine to her. He knew some women lost respect for guys who didnt do that kind of thing. Yet others enjoyed being the ones to ask first.
"I can make it anytime really, whatever works best for you is fine" Mike said, trying to be accomodating. He knew he could work his schedule around it, one of the perks of being an attending.

"I'm glad...and relieved that you do agree with me," she said smiling. She felt a bit better that he said that. She was afraid he would think she was too forward, and pushy somehow, even though she had asked him when she was so nervous...but she didn't want him to feel like she was any of those things.
"I can make it anytime too..." She said. "I hope it doesn't take as long to plan a day as it did to ask the other person out," she said with a small laugh, but only half kidding.

"I very much do agree with you" Mike said realizing he was agreing a little too much with her but he was nervous. But he still meant it, he was glad that things had worked out and it was worth the wait to end up having her agree to meet him for coffee (even if she was technically the one asking not accepting).
Mike laughed as she said she hoped it didnt take as long to plan. He hoped she wasnt getting upset with his indecision or regretting asking him so decided to just pick a time. "Maybe during lunch break then? Give us time to check on our morning patients?" He suggested.

"You are very agreeable," she said smiling, not saying it in a mocking way, but rather, as a good thing. It was easy to get along with someone when they agreed with just about everything you said. Although she hoped he wasn't just saying that to be polite..she hoped he was saying it because he truly meant it. Of course, she didn't want to call him a liar either.
"Thats a good idea! I don't have my schedule memorized, so I'm glad we'll have time to check," she said smiling. "I agree with your suggestion," she added in a bit of a teasing way since he always agreed with her, hoping he wouldn't get offended by it.

Mike could feel his cheeks redden slightly with embarrassment as she pointed out how agreeable he was, obviously having noticed it herself. "You're just someone who is very easy to agree with" He commented hoping to help himself out of the situation but seeing that he probably had agreed one too many times with her.
"I'm glad you do agree" Mike said laughing lightly as she joked with him. "What time do you usually take your break? I can stop by your department if you like, pick you up" He offered. If he hadnt been man enough to be able to ask her out, at least he could offer to make the effort to get her.

She smiled when he said that she was someone who was very easy to agree with. "Thats so kind of you to say. I guess its good we both agree so easily with each other...less arguing." She hoped that hadn't come out the wrong way...she didn't mean to imply that they were going to argue at any point, she just meant that the more two people agreed the less they argued. It was too late to take it back without looking like a complete fool now. All she could do was hope that he didn't think it sounded bad, which was what she was afraid of right now.
"I have my break around 5 in the evening, or late afternoon I guess..today anyway. I tend to remember when I have my breaks so it gives me something to count down to," she said, half kidding. "I would um, like that if you came to pick me up," she admitted, shyly.

Mike smiled as she called him kind. He liked when she said it would mean less arguing. It sounded like she was possibly thinking of the possibility of this becoming more than coffee, that they'd have a chance to have arguments, maybe even a real relationship. "I think we'll get along quite well"
Mike smiled again as she told him her break time and agreed to let him pick her up. "That sounds great, I'm off at 5 today as well" He told her. "I'll come pick you up then...If I get held up in surgery, I'll make sure to have someone let you know" He told her, not wanting her to worry if he wasnt there right at 5.
