At his comment, she now felt it was safe to assume that he did not have anyone in his life that he was seeing romantically. Why was she so happy about it? She had just met this man, and he probably had no interest in her. She already made herself look like a fool, rambling on about things that he probably didn't even care about. "Again, I know what you mean. Sometimes, after a long day of work, all you want is someone to be there to greet you when you get home." Once again, she was rambling. "Oddly enough, I use work as both an excuse and a distraction," she admitted, speaking aloud her earlier thoughts.
"I agree," she said as he said that finding someone who understood the workload. "Thats probably why its easier to meet someone in the hospital, rather than outside of work; its more convenient and the medical staff understand the amount of work that needs to be done."

At Natalie's first comment, Mike believed that maybe she happened to be single as well. She said it would be nice to have someone greet her when she got home. But then her last comment made him think that maybe she was just trying to sympathize with him. That maybe she remembered what it was like before she met her guy, who from the sounds of it also worked at the hospital. She wondered who it was. Probably a surgeon. The surgeons got all the girls, damn them. Mike knew that even if she was single, he wouldnt have a shot with her. She was out of his league. Beautiful, intelligent, kind, sucessful. But at this point he figured he at least needed to confirm it. He had already pryed, he might as well go the distance...maybe he could become friends with the happy couple.
"Oh so you're seeing someone from the hospital?" He said trying to sound as cheery as possible and as much like he had assumed that was what she had meant as opposed to asking it. Mike hoped that she wouldnt think he was being too nosey or forward that way if it was just something he gathered from what she told him (or so he hoped).

["The surgeons got all the girls, damn them." LMAO!!!! That line made me laugh!! Poor Mike!]
Natalie looked at him, trying to remember what she said and hoped to have no given that idea. "Oh, no..I'm um..I'm not seeing anyone actually." Did this mean he was interested? Probably not. He was probably just asking to be polite, nothing else. She wondered if she should ask him the same question. At least that way she would be able to stop guessing and know a definite answer. After all, it was a pretty direct question.
"What about you? Are you seeing anyone from the hospital?" She wanted to add 'or anyone else' but she figured that was FAR too obvious, so she left it at that. She tried not to sound too hopeful, as she did not want to make him feel uncomfortable or anything, so she hoped her tone was appropriate.

"Ohh" Mike replied, his lips curling upwards slighly. He then realized he was smiling, trying to quickly going back to a more normal reactional nod. He knew he shouldnt seem happy that she was single, she'd know the reason if she thought that. But maybe he had smiled because he secretly hoped she would. He also didnt want her thinking he was just some jerk who enjoyed people being single and alone.
"Me, oh no I'm not seeing anyone either" He said, realizing how lame that sounded, probably even desperate since he had just asked her that, he hoped she wouldnt think that. He looked down towards his feet feeling embarrassed by how he was probably coming off right now.

She wasn't sure what to make of his smile. Was he once again just trying to be polite? Or was it because he was checking so that they could perhaps go out sometime? She found herself breathing a small sigh of relief when he said he wasn't seeing anyone either. Her eyes widened at what she had done, and she looked at the elevator floors, each one lighting up as she was too embarrassed that he possibly heard that.
"Thats...um..." What was she trying to say? Yes she was happy he wasn't seeing anyone but how obviously was she going to be? "I'm sure the right person will come." Now she was even more embarrassed. Had she really just said that? She was making herself look quite ridiculous. Perhaps she should just stop before he didn't want anything to do with her.

Mike heard what sounded like a sigh. But it wasnt an annoyed sigh, or even an axious one...but was there relief? No, she was probably just breathing deeply. He glanced over at her and saw her staring at the numbers of the elevator so quickly diverted his eyes to the same spot so it wouldnt seem as though he was staring at her (though he couldnt say he wouldnt like to stare for a little while).
"I like to think so" Mike said, thinking about the possibility (in his dreams) of her going out with him, but he immediately realized he had said it outloud and hoped she hadn't interpreted it the way his thoughts were meaning it to be said. "I mean, I hope so....I'd like to meet someone..." He told her, but the truth was right now he wanted to get to know someone better, her. He knew it was silly, he just met this woman and his little crush was already occupying his thoughts.

He'd like to think so? What did that mean? She found herself over analyzing everything he was saying, and reaching her own conclusions. Being a psychiatrist, she was used to doing that. When it came to relationships, she felt clueless. The same skills she used as a doctor, were useless when trying to figure these kinds of things out. She didn't have a strong relationship with her family, she didn't have many friends...how could she ever be with someone when someone she was interested in...one of the first people she was really interested in, probably thought she was odd? Not a good start at all.
When he said that he would like to meet someone, that led her to believe that he hadn't met anyone yet and since he just met her, she fell into that category. "Oh..." She said, trying her best not to sound disappointed. She would have to say something else before she became any more obvious. "I'm sure you will...you're a successful, attractive young doctor and any woman would be lucky to be with you." So much for not being obvious. She figured though that once they exited this elevator, he wouldn't want to see her again so for some reason, she wasn't AS embarrassed as she probably should be for saying that.

Mike heard her disappointment. Uh oh, this wasnt good, what had he said to make her sound disappointed like that. He hoped to meet someone? Did that mean that she didnt want him to meet someone...because she might be interested? Or maybe that wasn't disappointment at all in her voice and she was just making a general comment.
His cheeks blushed slightly hearing her compliments. He wished that she was interested but couldnt help but think she was saying any woman but her would be lucky to be with him. Like the whole 'its not you its me' thing when you break up with someone. He was great, but not right for her, or something to that effect.
"Thank you for saying that, I do think you're giving me a nice ego boost, maybe not so well deserved but its nice of you to say those things" Mike told her. "You're a beautiful woman, smart, kind, a sense of humor...and you give nice compliments." Mike felt that since she had complimented him first, his returning the compliment had to be acceptable (or so he hoped). He glanced up at the elevator numbers, dreading the time it would stop. "Any man would be lucky to be with you too. I know I would feel lucky..." He said, barely able to believe he said the last part but knowing it was too late to take it back now, and maybe he didnt want to.

"Why wouldn't it be deserved? Its true," she argued, a little shyly. As he went on to say those extremely kind things about her, she felt her own cheeks redden. "Its very sweet of you to say those things...thank you! I don't think they are quite true either, but I still appreciate the compliments." No one had said that to her before, and so she felt incredibly flattered, a little sad though that he wasn't interested in her. Her last thought was put aside however when he said that he would feel lucky. Was he implying what she thought he was? Or was it just her, hearing things she wanted to hear...interpreting things the way she wanted them to be.
"You...you would?" She asked, looking at him, and waiting both excitedly and nervously for his response. At least now she had hope. That hope could quickly be gone though, and she would end up disappointed and humiliated yet again.

"The things I said are very true, they probably didnt even do you justice" Mike told her shyly, figuring he might as well risk it since he had come this far. He swallowed nervously as she questioned if he would feel lucky. He wondered if she was disturbed by the idea that someone like him would have a crush on her and was hoping that it wasnt true. Or maybe...she actually could be interested. He wished he could read women better.
"Yeah...I would..." Mike told her nervously. "You're everything a man could possibly want....I know we just met so I probably sound crazy for talking like this...I'm feeling a little crazy for admitting this"

She felt her whole face go red as he said that it didn't do her justice, and that she was everything a man could want. Did he mean? Was he just being polite? Was she hallucinating? She tried to maintain her composure before all these questions burst out of her and she just further embarrassed herself. "Thats so sweet...um...thank you," she said as she nervously, lightly tugged on her sleeves.
"I don't think I am...but...you don't sound crazy. You don't sound remotely crazy...what your saying is so kind..." Admitting it? Did that mean he actually was interested? Should she just say something? Even if she did make a complete fool of herself, this elevator ride had to end at some point and this hospital was big, so she could probably avoid him. "You shouldn't feel crazy...would you think I was crazy if I admitted that I um...mighthavefeelingsforyou," she said incredibly quickly, clearing her throat immediately after. She couldn't look at him while saying that, so stared at the buttons on the elevator.

"Trust me you are! If you saw what I see..." Mike said stopping himself as he realized what he was saying could just be coming off as an obnoxious guy talking about her being hot and wanting to get into her pants. "I mean...I'm not just talking about your looks, you're a very beautiful woman...but you have so much more...a deeper beauty...qualities any man would admire" Mike told her, feeling more embarrassed by each word he said to her but feeling the need to say them none the less. He almost hoped the elevator would open to save him from becoming the laughing stock of the hospital once she told everyone else how he was acting.
When Natalie told him that she didnt think he was crazy at first he thought she was just being polite once again, but her last rushed sentenced changed his mind. Did she just say what he thought she did? She wasnt looking at him, maybe he imagined it, but he had heard something. "You do?" Mike said surprised. "I...." He said in complete shock half expecting her to start laughing and saying she was joking "I dont think you're crazy at all either...I..might feel the same in fact...." He said shyly looking over at her.

He kept complimenting her, and she felt like she didn't deserve it...she wasn't even looking at him right now. She was being a coward, and looking at the buttons rather than at him. Perhaps if she actually looked at him, it would make her words sound more sincere...no, she was certain it would make her words sound more sincere. After all, he was probably used to women flirting with him. She didn't want to come off as that...and so hoped he didn't see her as just some crazy lady.
When he said he might feel the same way, she felt excited but still nervous. Was he just saying that to be polite? She felt him looking at her, but she was frozen. She needed to turn her head, and so very slowly, looked at him. "You...would?" She should say more than just two words. "The things you are saying about me are so incredibly sweet, and I'm sure you're used to women flirting with you..and..." She was speaking aloud her thoughts, not planning what she was saying (which wasn't a smart thing to do). "If you feel the same way, which...you don't just have to say to be nice or anything because if you don't then I totally understand...then um...maybe....we could...get a cup of coffee sometime?" There. She had finally done it. She asked him out on a date. Well, a cup of coffee. Should she have made it more than just coffee...or less than just coffee? Or was coffee okay? She had just hoped to imply that she wanted to see him again after they got out of this elevator. She looked back at the buttons.

"I would...I mean...I do" Mike said shyly as she asked if he really did feel that way. "No, I'm not just saying that, I dont think you'd ever have to be worried any guy was just saying that with you...how could someone not feel something" Mike knew his face had to be red, why couldnt he stop himself from saying these things?
When she said he must be used to girls flirting with him all the time he shook his head. "No..not at all...this is a rarity which is probably why I'm making a fool of myself..." He was then stunned with her next question. Had she really just asked him to go out for coffee? The very thing he had been working up the courage to ask her out for? "Coffee?" He repeated not thinking he heard her right.
Dr. Crane's next movement was something he couldnt explain, nor could he even reason out in his head since he had been waiting for the doors to open for so long. But as he watched the numbers go down, and saw they were a floor away from reaching their destination he freaked out and reached out pushing the emergency stop button halting the elevator. Mike's mouth gaped open, shocked at his own action just staring at his hand before looking over at her, sure that by now she would be regretting her last question and thinking he was either a psycho or a pervert.
"Oh my god...I'm so sorry...I dont know why I did that" Mike apologized (though not restarting the elevator). "I...just...I mean...I would love to...coffee...but if you want to rethink that after this I completely understand..." He told her, feeling like a complete idiot. How could he ruin this?

She continued to blush when he asked how someone could not feel this way about her. "Well your the first person to ever say this kind of stuff to me," she told him, still going on the assumption that she wasn't the first woman to flirt with him. It was why his next words were so shocking. "Really? You're not used to this?" That certainly surprised her. An attractive, kind hearted doctor like himself...and he wasn't used to women flirting with him? "You're not making a fool of yourself," she quickly added, not wanting him to think that he was. "If anything...I'm making a fool of myself." After all, she was the one who had just asked him out.
After he repeated the word 'coffee' and paused, thats when she knew it. He wasn't interested...she had just completely humiliated herself. She looked at the floors...they were almost there...they were getting close. She needed those doors to open so she could leave this moment, and never look back (even though it was going to be impossible not to remember this particular elevator ride). When they were so close, the elevator stopped and she looked over, noticing he was the reason it had.
He then went on to say that he would love to have coffee, and when he said that, she was glad he stopped the elevator. "You would??" She asked excitedly once again, just to make sure. "I would love that too!" She was probably getting a little too excited, so tried to calm herself down. "And don't feel bad for stopping the elevator...I am glad that you did," she told him with a shy smile. "I don't need to rethink my answer."
