George took a seat on the stool at Joe's Bar, as he threw down his bag and took off his coat, getting comfortable. He was both excited and exhausted. The bad thing about getting a night off was that you wanted to do so much to make it worth wile, but the only thing you had the energy to do was sleep.
"I'll have a beer Joe!" He said, smiling as he tapped his foot anxiously and looked around the bar, for a familiar face. He recognized a few of the doctors and nurses, not many that he would know well enough to go up to and start a conversation with. He hoped someone he knew came in soon...drinking alone wasn't exactly his idea of fun.

Dr. Austin's shift had just ended and he was ordered to go home and get some sleep but that was the last thing he wanted to do. Dr. Austin was the kind that wanted to stick around and help as much as he can even though sometimes he just got in the way. He had not been working at Grace Hospital for long but he was there long enough to find out that there was not that big a need for someone of his training, pediatricians where just not that needed.
Oh well, none the less he solders on and does what he can to help out. At times he is mistaken for a intern and gets orders to do one of there jobs. Just happy to have something to do... He will go and do it. Well on this night he was ordered to leave by the head of staff and that was just what he did. Not one to disobey an direct order by someone higher up then himself, he left the hospital but did not go home.
See, Dr. Douglas Aaron Austin has a tiny fear of being alone and that is why he has two dogs and a cat but even they are not always enough. So rather then going right home, he goes to the bar across the street. He had been here once or twice before but never really stuck around long. He was also one of those people that get bored fast. So that brings us up to date with why he has entered the bar.
Standing at the door Doug looked around at the other people in the bar checking them out, seeking out a target. As he looked them over he decided that non of the lady's would really be worth his charm so he smoothed his hair back with one hand as he made his way coolly and calmly to the bar. Little did he know but the cocky and childish grin on his face made him look more like a dork then handsome.
He took a seat on a stool not to far from another Dr. he remembered from the hospital. After taking a moment to try and match a name to the face he gave up and called to the bar man. "Beer please." While he waited he turned on the stool and starts looking around unimpressed with the place.
(ooc: sorry so long... could not help myself lol)

When George's beer was brought to him, he looked at it before taking a small sip. No one had shown up yet. He had heard the bell attached to the door ring a few times, but after the fourth time, he gave up looking at it to see who it was. He figured if it was someone he knew, they would come and sit with him. He heard someone order a drink, and casually looked over, briefly the first time, turning his attention back to his beer, but when the man's face registered (only seconds after his initial glance) he looked back at him. He stared at him for a while, trying to remember where he knew him from. Obviously the hospital, since George didn't have time to meet people anywhere else, but he was trying to remember what kind of doctor he was. He was new, that was for sure, so it made George's placement of him both easier and more difficult. There were so many doctors there that he hadn't met, and yet whenever a new doctor came, everyone knew everything about him or her even before any of the staff even met the new doctor. It was minutes after that he realized he was staring, probably not a good habit of George O'Malley's and he would have turned away if the word hadn't hit him. "Pediatrics! Right?" Random indeed. But he was expressing his excitement of satisfying his curiousity. "Um.. George...George O'Malley," he quickly introduced. "I'm a doctor...actually intern...well I mean, I guess an intern is a doctor..." He took a sip of his beer, a good excuse to stop rambling before he scared away this familiar stranger, and that would not be a good thing for two reasons; one, George did enjoy meeting new people and two, if he got on his good side, maybe he would have some good surgeries that George could volunteer for. Of course his first reason was the primary one, and the second would just be a nice perk. [no need to apologize! It was an awesome post, and mine is a bit long too ]

It did not take long before Doug realized that the guy next to him was staring at him. This made him a little uncomfortable and when he was uncomfortable he fidgeted around more then he should. He rocked his stool back a little bit so that he could recline on the bar just a little. He rested his elbows on the bar just so that he could keep his balance. Doug would try to eye the other person out the corner of his eyes while turning his head a bit more as if to look away. He must have looked silly doing this but at the moment he did not care.
No sooner had Doug turned his eyes away, in fear of them getting stuck like that, did O'Malley speak to him. The sudden burst from the other man sent him almost falling off his stool sideways. He jumped off the stool and allowed it to fall over side ways and while the other man stumbled through his introduction Doug took a deep breath and tried to calm himself down. Once he was sure he was calm, he coolly reached down and lifted the stool off it's side and sat down.
Lucky for him his beer came, he gave the bar tender a fake grin and lifted his bottle to the man before taking a long drink out of it. "Aaaahhh." he smiled slightly and turned so that he could be partly facing the other man. "Okay..." He paused for a moment to keep the fact that his pride was a little busted from that near fall he just had. "Yeah... Pediatrics... My field..." He cleared his throat and nodded, "I'm Douglas Austin. Nice to meet you O'Malley. I believe I have seen you in the halls always so busy hu?" He gave the other fella a kind smile.

George's eyes widened as the doctor fell from his stool, and as a reflex action, George stood from his. "A-Are you okay?" He asked. As the man regained his previous position, George also sat in his seat once again, feeling embarrassed for exclaiming his realization so...enthusiastically, that it had caused the man that he should be trying to impress to fall off his stool.
"Dr. Austin, its nice to meet you...a pleasure to meet you." He contemplated whether to extend his hand or not...the bar was a pretty casual place, then again, he would be seeing him in more formal environment at some point. He extended his hand. "I've heard a lot about you...I mean, good things about you of course." He paused, wondering if what he said implied that there were any bad rumours about him, even though he hadn't heard any.
"Not that anyone should say anything bad...because...I'm sure you haven't done anything bad. Well I mean, all do bad things...mistakes rather, since no one is perfect..." George felt like shooting himself; his nervous rambling always got the better of him, no matter who he was trying to impress. Whether it be a woman he liked, or another doctor, or even the chief...it always got the better of him!
He gave a small chuckle, thankful that he had something else to respond to before the doctor left, thinking George was a little odd. "Yeah...I guess being an intern...well, there isn't too much time for relaxing. But I like it that way...of course; the busier I am, the more I learn, which is great! Although it is nice to get nights like these off."

Doug had no idea where the even start. He was trying his best to follow Georges ramblings but that was very hard for him to do. To Doug, George seemed to be nervous and overly excited. Doug relaxed a bit and smiled at hearing that George had heard of him, he knew that things had a away of getting out about the new Doctors in town but he had no idea how fast it could get around especially in a place like Grey's.
Doug shook Georges hand, before he could get out a single word the man was talking once more. Doug picked up his beer and took another drink, he was going to wait it out. At last George replied to the comment he made about him being busy. The enthusiasm amused Doug, despite this man bing somewhat hard to follow he was starting to like him.
At last it was his turn to speak again so he put down his bottle and nods, "Please call me Doug. No need for formality's here. You know... I did not expect anyone to really take much notice of me when I first came here... Then again, a pediatric in a hospital like this one is kinda like a fish out of water hu?" He laughed and moved his eyes around the bar room once more.
He was not looking for anyone or anything but still he liked looking. "Nights off are great. I don't think I have had one sense I have been here." He looked at George with a half grin, "If I had my way about it I think I would move in. I like it there... The other Doctors and people... Just great." Now it was Dougy's turn to ramble and that was about as much as he would let him self do for now.

"Alright, Dr Doug then!" He laughed at the way it sounded, and then froze, wondering if he sounded too immature to find something like that amusing. So far, his attempts to impress this new doctor were failing miserably.
George nodded when he said he stuck out like a fish out of the water. "Yeah...Seattle Grace is quite the gossip place," he said taking another sip of his beer to have more time to think about what he was going to say instead of just rambling off again. "There was news about the hospital getting a new pediatrician, which is great...because I guess, you never can have too many." Avoid rambling George...avoid rambling. He repeated this phrase in his mind...he had to try to sound like he had SOME confidence, otherwise, he would never be able to assist this doctor, and well...he wouldn't give a very good impression.
George noticed him looking around, and hoped it wasn't the kind of look that someone did when they wanted to get out of a conversation...when they wanted to get rid of someone. So far, he seemed to be pretty normal, and so George was going to stay until he was told to leave. "I can imagine you've been busy. Seattle Grace has had a shortage of pediatricians, so you've probably been swamped with work. But yeah...a break is nice. This is my first one in a while. Usually, they are later...or just a few hours in the middle of the day, but luckily, I get tonight and tomorrow morning off."

Doug had meant that George could call him Doug with out the 'Dr.' before it but decided not to say anything. *Ah a normal-ish conversation!* was all he could think when George Begin controlling himself. "Oh really? It is hu?" Doug had no idea that he had come to be a part of a hospital team that enjoyed gossiping. This did interest him and he was sure it was written on his face, Doug in fact liked to hear a little gossip every now and then.
"Pediatricians are just as important as any other Doctor. Someone's gotta be there for the little tykes." He grinned once more and nodded at George, "Oh yeah. Swamped really isn't the word for it. From the get go I've been working over time and just tonight I got caught up and I was going to stay longer but... The powers that be decided it was time for me to leave." He chuckled and took a sip of his beer, he knew they called her 'Nazi' but he was not yet ready to call her that as well.
"Well tomorrow morning I got office hours, between you and me I enjoy that far more then surgery." He took a deep breath and let it out slowly. It was stressful and even though he was at his best he still liked office hours better.

George nodded while taking another sip. "Yeah! It is!" he said once again. "I never thought that hospitals would be like that, until I realized how easy it is to gossip. Everyone has a story there...its kinda like high school. It seems that there are even cliques and stuff." George for one hated high school. Needless to say, he had always been the nerdy kind who would rather stay home and play video games rather than go out to a movie with his friends (even though he didn't have many friends). But it was different at the hospital; he wasn't seen as a little dweeb (at least not by everyone). He had a bit of a better reputation than that...at least he hoped he did; he was always unsure about that sort of thing, but at least not everyone hated him and that was always a good sign.
"I agree," he said smiling. He too loved working with children and enjoyed the younger patients that came in. "I guess that makes sense...it sucks though! All that work, but hey, at least you're doing something you love." He assumed that anyone who did medicine had the passion for it, otherwise, no one would work as hard as they would to achieve their medical degree. He paused, thinking about who he was talking about. "Wait...who?" He asked, obviously not smart enough to figure it out.
"You...you do??" George was shocked to hear that someone would like that more than surgery. Then again, he was a doctor and George was training to be one...but still, how could surgery not be someone's favorite? "I'm...wow...that's...I guess you were like me when you were an intern, and couldn't believe that someone would like office hours more than surgery...right?"

Doug never liked high school and to hear George say that it was like high school his mind drifted back to all the times when he was tripped in the lunch room, stuffed in his locker, egged, teased and all kinds of other really bad things. He knew that none of these people would do that but still there will always be that element of, I'm better then you no matter what hospital or place you go.
The only thing that brought him back from his memories and thoughts was when George asked him 'you do?' Doug now had that dear in the head lights look because he knew that he had just missed out on everything the other man had said. He was really starting to wonder if he had ADD or something like that because this dazing out thing is not going to fly in surgery.
Doug at last caught onto what he was talking about with the last question he asked. "Actually, yeah. I was like that." He chuckled and thought back to when a Doctor he had been under had told him the same thing. He really had a hard time believe it and thought it was a joke... Right up until that Doctor called it quites and walked out the door to settle into a clinic that had nothing to do with cutting into people. Doug shook his head, last thing he wanted was to be like that guy.
He cleared his throat and looked right at George, "I knew a Doctor that was close to retirement. He told me once the same thing I just told you. I thought it was a joke." He shrugged his shoulder, picked up his beer and took a few more swallows from it. Leaving that last story hanging wide open.

From his choice not to answer the high school comment, George assumed high school wasn't one of this doctors favorite stages of his life. Then again, who really loved high school? Only the people who were popular and had a lot of friends and weren't teased loved it...but that certainly wasn't George. The reason he was able to get into med school (just get in) was because he didn't get distracted...he didn't have the opportunity to get distracted, so all his focus was on his studies.
"Really?" He said, although he wasn't too surprised that another doctor had said it to him...maybe it was just something that George would understand when he got to that point. Although right now, he couldn't see anything more exciting than surgery.
"It definitely sounds like a joke. I mean...no offense or anything; I guess surgery for any intern is the most exciting thing, and to think that people prefer something else is just...unbelievable!"

Doug put his beer down and held up a finger to show he was going to say something. "Now don't get me wrong. Just because I enjoy the office hours does not mean I don't take pride or enjoy my job in the surgery department. It just means that office hours allows me a change to sit or relax a little... Recoup from whatever might of happened the night before."
He smiled at George and nods just a little, "When I was a intern I hated the idea of going to the clinic and seeing people. I was just itching to get back to the operating rooms." He allowed himself a moment to think about them days. He was getting older he must admit and with age comes changes. "Nothing like the rush or the pride of a job well done. To hold someone's life in the palm of your hands and doing whatever it takes to make sure you bring them out better then they where before." He knew his voice must have sounded wistfully.
"But there is a darker side to that... And I am sure you have thought about that." He looked off for the moment before looking back at him, "Losing someone is not the hardest part... It's facing the family and beating yourself up, asking yourself over and over.. was there something more I could have done?" He shrugged and wiped his mouth, "Too many times have I seen interns beat themselves up over that question and at times... I've seen them walk out the door and never come back." He nodded thoughtfully as he recalled the time he thought about doing that.

George took another gulp of his drink, listening to the doctor explain that although he enjoyed office hours, it didn't mean he didn't enjoy surgery. "I guess..I might be like that one day...wishing for less hectic times, like working in the office. But for now...well, I'm glad to hear that its not just the group of interns I know that are the ones who are constantly looking for a good surgery."
He paused as Doug went on to talk about how facing the family was the hardest part. He knew about that all too well...the woman he had promised who's husband would be okay, but ended up dying. Every time he had to tell a family member that they were never going to see someone they loved again, it always made George's own eyes tear, even though he didn't know the family very well.
"I know," he began reflectively, thinking about particular instances. "I guess...well, I don't know...does it ever become...easier?" He wondered if there was ever going to be a point where he wouldn't cry anymore or that if that point did come, would it mean he didn't have any emotions left and that he just become a cold person.

"All surgery's are good... No matter how big or small. All of them are important." He game a nod and smiled just a little. He was sure that sounded rehearsed because it's the same line he would give when he was resident back at his old job in Dayton. Pushing that to the side he moved back into the darker part of the conversation.
When George asked if it ever becomes easier Doug paused to think that one over. There really was no clear answer to that one ever. "I think it depends on what kind of person you are." He slowly nodded. "Some people can go through there whole time being a medical professional and never feel a thing. Some crave that emotional high so much that they chase it like a high"
He paused for the moment and then went on, "Then there are the ones that are some place in between... So many levels that it's hard to tell where you are." He looked at George once more and sighed. "I think the day I stop feeling something is the day I walk away."

"Very true!" George said in reference to Doug's comment about all surgeries being important. "I guess some surgeries are more exciting for interns than others...no matter how wrong that sounds." It sounded embarrassing saying this to another doctor; of course doctors were fully aware of interns' competitions amongst each other, but saying it like this...made them sound greedy and heartless. George wasn't going to deny his enjoyment for some surgeries than others. It was strange though, the ones that were more dangerous for the patient tended to be the ones that were more exciting for an intern...quite strange indeed.
George knew doctors of both kinds; some who didn't feel anything, some who were consumed by the tragedy, and others who were a balance. "I think that would apply to me too...I mean, its so hard not to care, but at the same time, you can't let it get to you or you would never be able to do another surgery again." George felt he was somewhat of a balance between the two...or on so many levels, that he wasn't sure where he fit anymore. Was it heatless of him to tell a husband that his wife died and then get a good nights sleep? Would it make him a bad surgeon if he was devestated over the loss of another life?
"They don't teach you things like this in medical school...so I guess its up to the individual to figure it out."
