Kalpenn Modi made his way into Seattle Grace Hospital. He wasn't nervous at all, even though he had no idea where he was going to go, or what he was going to do. He wasn't as prepared as some of the interns, but they were nerds. They probably have been preparing for this day for months. It would not surprise him if they stole the blueprints to this hospital and memorized them just so they would not get lost...maybe even tattoo them to their body like that one dude did in some TV show.
He shook his head, his mind getting distracted. He bobbed it once again, mouthing along to the words of the song that he was listening to. When he got to the locker room, he took off his head phones and put them in the locker, already missing them. He loved music...his music though. Not his parents music which involved endless Cd's of just one guy playing the sitar. He looked around and for the first time, noticed that no one else was there. Weird. He looked at his watch and realized he was a little late. He shrugged to himself and continued to put away his things, grabbing his scrubs and quickly changing into them.
When he was done, he checked his appearance in the small magnetic locker mirror he bought for himself, and fixed his hair. He slammed his locker shut, still making odd neck contortions and the music played in his head, him singing along under his breath. He walked outside the locker room and stood in the hall way. Where to now...he could just wander around until he found something interesting, or someone interesting. Maybe he would just do that. He didn't feel like working too hard today. It was his first day! He wanted it to be a relaxing one. [Julie! This post is for you, so you can pick any one of your muses you would like for him ]

Izzie smiled after having given her introductory speech to her interns. HER interns! That was an exciting thought. Her first day of not being an intern. Of not having to go through that hell. Now she wasnt the lowest person on the totem pole anymore. She could put her interns through the hell she had gone through. She was about to send her interns off to do some scut work. Something meaningless, that just took up time. Something that was probably necessary but something she no longer had to do.
But then she noticed something...she was one intern short. She looked down at her notes of her intern roster and figured out who she was missing. "Has anyone seen Modi?" She waited and they all looked between them no one answering. She sighed annoyed. "Fine, go get something to do, follow up on labs, familiarize yourself with the patients and be ready to present something when I get back....do not kill anyone" She added quickly before leaving to go in search of her missing intern.
Izzie tried to tell herself that being the first day this guy could have just gotten very lost. He was probably somewhere upset now, frantically trying to find out where he was supposed to be. She'd reprimand him sure, but she would be understanding for that. So when she was thinking this, and consequently saw him wandering the hallways not looking frantic, distressed or even as if he was attempting to find where he should be or what he should be doing, Izzy became furious. She stood back watching him for a moment, knowing he had to be her intern, but not able to believe he would be doing this.
She took a deep breath before walking over so she didnt completely kill him. "Dr. Modi? Can you explain to me why you feel as if you're exempt from reporting to your resident?"

Kal was looking around, poking his head in random rooms, not bothering to ask anyone for directions as to where his resident might be. He really didn't care. He was enjoying this freedom, rather than listen to someone boss him around and tell him what to do. He got enough of that from his parents every time he was home. He then heard a female's voice and look at the person who was speaking to him.
"Its Kal," was the first thing he said to her. "Doctor Modi makes me feel old," he said grinning. From the tone of her voice, it sounded like he was going to get a lecture...the very kind he wanted to avoid. "I didn't think it was necessary because I haven't find my resident...not yet anyone, still looking," he said, still smiling. Then, a realization hit him. "Wait...how did you know my name?" He paused, another realization hitting him. "Ohhh...are you..doctor Stevens, I think it is," he said, trying to recall the name of his assigned Resident. That sounded pretty right...hopefully he didn't get that wrong. If he did, he would probably just laugh.

"Okay...Kal" Izzie spoke his name emphasizing it in a way to let him know she was annoyed with him, not annoyed by the fact he asked her to call him by his first name, but annoyed by everything else he was doing. "Most interns figure out with little effort that they need to be here on time their first day and that it is their responsibility to do whatever they need to in order to meet with that resident as soon as possible...and not end up wandering the halls"
"And yes, I am Dr. Stevens and you're assigned to me. You will need to learn punctuality and responsibility"

He stared at her, trying not to look as bored as he felt. Why was she lecturing him? He hated it! He should have avoided it by avoiding her for a little bit longer. This hospital was big, he was sure there were plenty of places to hide...there had to be. Oh great, not only was she lecturing him, but she has his Resident, which meant that he probably had a lot of lectures to listen to in the future.
"Hey, I heard there was a guy who came in here with a bomb in him...is that true?" He asked randomly, as the thought of it entered his mind. He clearly wasn't listening to her, because he didn't care about what she had to say. He was easily distracted, and as he thought about all the things he heard about Seattle Grace Hospital, this was one of those things that he wanted to ask about. "Were you...you know, there? Did you see him or anything?"

Izzie was getting more and more annoyed as she saw that the intern obviously wasnt paying attention to her. Yes, the intern, he was no longer HER inter, hers would pay better attention. Her interns would listen to her, maybe even fear her a little, but most of all, her interns would respect her.
"This isnt the time to to be discussing past cases" Izzie told him, unable to believe he had just ignored everything she said to him to bring up a cool case he had heard about. "If you dont follow my rules, you wont be seeing any cases"

Kal's eyes widened a little with excitement when she said that now wasn't the time to be talking about past cases. "Dude! That means it is true!" He said with a short laugh. "Aw man! Thats so cool! Were you one of the Residents...or I guess interns who treated it? I heard the thing actually exploded!" Yes, Kal was excited about such things.
He was ignoring her lecture, trying to have his own questions answered, and his own curiosity satisfied, rather than listen to a woman, who really didn't even look that much older than himself, tell him what to do. Although, he did want to work here and see all the cool cases, perhaps he should try to get on her better side? He extended his hand. "Nice to meet you Doctor Stevens. I'm sure your rules are the same as everyone else's...nothing I haven't heard before."

Izzie couldn't believe this guy, here she was giving him a lecture and he was laughing about how cool a bomb was. Bombs were not cool, especially bombs that blew up. "Yeah it did explode and a good man died because of it, someone who shouldnt have had to die that day because he hadnt been the one stupid enough to play with bombs...or stupid enough to think its cool when they blow up" She added annoyed with her intern already.
She heard him say that her rules were nothing he hadnt heard before. "Good, then if you know them you can start following them. You dont get in an OR unless you get my approval. People that dont end up following my rules get to do rectals all day until they start" She told him giving a fake smile.

He could tell by her tone that she wasn't very impressed by his obvious excitement at the idea of a bomb being in a man. "That sucks..." He said, trying to express the same sympathy. He did think it was sad, he wasn't so insensitive that he didn't think death was sad, he just tried not to focus on it, unless he was forced to. And right now, he didn't have to be focused on the one man that died, when so many other people (from what he heard) had lived. "Its cool that the dude with the bomb in him lived...he did right? Thats what I heard anyway." He was surprised to hear her say that he wasn't stupid enough to think it was cool...hadn't she thought it was at the time? How could someone not? "Aw come on! You must have thought it was pretty cool at the time...even just a little bit." He really had no idea what she had felt like at the time, he was just making assumptions.
"Rectals?" He repeated making a face at the thought of it. Knowing him though, he would probably find a way to make it entertaining for him...although, was there really a way to make rectals entertaining? Maybe some day, he would have to find out (even if he never wanted to). "Yeah yeah I know the drill...no OR without permission, I've heard that before. Do interns get to do any surgeries though?" He wondered. He knew that sometimes it varied depending on which Resident one got, and so, wondered what his Resident was like.

Izzie was relieved to hear him at least express a little sense of remorse over the man's death. It had been hard on them to know that he had died like that, just as they thought everything would be over...he was gone into a pink mist. There wasnt even anything left for the family to bury. It was devastating. So to hear this intern calling it cooll...it didnt sit well with her. Yes, maybe she had thought the idea of it being in a man's body without going off was cool at the time, but it wasnt cool anymore.
"What did I tell you about discussing past cases. NOT the time for it!" Izzie told him frustrated. "And yes rectals, and the pit, and that's IF i even let you near patitents and not just running things to the lab. You should not be concerning yourself with surgeries right now. You need to concern yourself with getting on MY good side after making a lousy first impression by not showing up today, or else, no OR for you"

"That sounds like you did think it was cool," he said when she told him that it was not the time to talk about past cases. "Whats so bad about talking about them? I am a curious intern, is that so unusual?" He asked her, knowing that it most likely wasn't, which is why he asked her in the first place. "I am trying to get to know Seattle Grace Hospital a bit better...getting to know the history of this place." That was complete bull. He was just interested in getting to know all the cool cases so that his hopes of having the chance to have some himself would increase.
"But I did show up!" Kal argued. "I just didn't show up on time. But I don't think a late intern is something too uncommon. As well as a lost intern...which is exactly what I was! I had no idea where I was going." At least that much was true, he really didn't know where he was going.

Izzie glared at him when he told her that it sounded like she did find the case cool. She was not going to give him the pleasure of admitting either way what she thought of it. She was a resident now, he was her intern. He had to listen to her, not think the same things were cool. "There is a time and a place to talk about things, this is not the time to talk about old cases, this is your time to learn what to do on a day to day basis"
"A late intern is not unusal, but you werent a late intern who showed up joining the group halfway through rounds out of breath from trying to find us and catch up. You could have asked anyone of these people walking around with ID badges where to go, but you didnt"

He just smiled innocently when she glared at him, knowing that he was probably pissing her off. It wasn't quite his intention, but he knew he could stop...and yet, he chose not to. He probably should soon though, if he ever wanted to do surgery."Why not learn as much as you can in one day," he said, arguing with her statement about there being a time and place to discuss such things. "I can learn a lot...I'm eager. Thats a good quality in an intern, right?"
He listened as she explained what a 'late intern' should be like. "No, I wasn't...but thats cause I was trying to save me energy. I didn't want to be out of breath when I met my resident," he said grinning. Again, that wasn't the reason he hadn't tried to find his group...it was just the excuse he was giving. "And I didn't wanna look stupid either. And I probably would have if I asked someone for directions...they would have thought I was a moron for not knowing where I was going."[LOL! I always end up typing 'inmate' instead of 'intern'...too much PB...not that thats a bad thing ]

"Punctuality is a good quality in an intern, listening to your resident is an even better quality" Izzie told him frustrated with him for acting so carefree. She wanted him to be repentive, to be trying to get on her good side. If he didnt, she would make his life hell. She knew it was easily in her power to do so.
"Trust me you look stupider being late than you would have if you had asked for directions, and everyone is going to know that you're banned from the OR until you have my say so. No attendings are going to ask you in. You better impress me, and fast"
