George sat in the cafeteria, trying his best to keep his eyes open. He was tired, and he hadn't even been on shiFt for more than four hours. He needed to learn to go to bed more early the night before. He did it when he was in school...oh how he wanted to re live those childhood, carefree days. Now he was in a world of responsibility. Although, it was nice. He wouldn't want to go through his childhood again. There was far too much teasing involved.
He took a big gulp of his coffee, and another bite of his sandwich, glancing at a book he had open but was too tired to read. He had brought it with him to stay awake, but ironically, it was having the opposite affect on him. He needed someone to talk to. He had no idea where the gang was, probably not on call today, or working. He was so tempted to just take a nap, but that would just make him more tired for the rest of the day and he had a long day ahead of him at that.

Dr. Robert Chase had just paid for his food from the cafeteria line, he now stood with his tray looking around for an empty seat. This wasnt good, there were too many tables already claimed, no abandoned ones where he could just eat alone. Wasnt it supposed to be a privelege of being an attending that he didnt have to fight for a place to eat lunch? Okay so maybe that wasnt part of his contract but he figured it should be.
Chase glanced around trying to decide which group to join. There was the table of nurses who were eyeing him invitingly, but he knew that if he went there they'd spend lunch hitting on him, so he quickly looked away. There was the radiologists, but those guys always seemed a little strange, they had way too much excitement over lab pictures without ever even seeing the patient. There was a table of med students quizzing each other with flashcards who he knew would be terrified if he sat down at their table. Then finally he saw a table with only one other person there who had a book. Maybe he could sit there and the other man wouldnt be bothered. He looked familiar and thought he was in surgery as well, but Chase wasnt exactly sure.
Walking over to George's table he stopped beside the other man. "Do you mind if I join you?" He asked.

George's eyes were just about to close again when he heard an unfamiliar, Australian perhaps, voice. He looked up at the man and broke into a huge grin. "Sure! I mean..no I don't mind. Sure you can join me!" He was a little eager for company, so hoped it wasn't too apparent, otherwise, he would just be embarrassing himself. But he was pretty used to that, so he supposed it was no big deal.
"George...George O'Malley," he said, looking at the man. He looked like a Resident, or an Attending perhaps? George wasn't sure. He was never good at guessing ages. All he knew was that he had a white coat on, and that was enough to let him know that he was a doctor, as oppose to a nurse...or a random patient.

"Thanks!" Chase smiled, relieved that the other doctor seemed so friendly and didnt seem inconvenienced by him asking to sit here. He almost seemed glad to have company, which was nice. Chase set down his tray before extending out his hand to introduce himself.
"Robert Chase, nice to meet you Dr. O'Malley." Chase introduced himself, before sitting down across from the other doctor. "What department are you in?" He asked thinking the other doctor seemed friendly enough that he could make small talk with him.

George really was excited about meeting someone new. "Its nice to meet you too Doctor Chase," he told him, watching him as he took a seat. He did seem rather friendly, as he was trying to make conversation. That made George happy. At least he wouldn't have to sit in an awkward silence with this man.
"I'm a surgical intern," George answered grinning. "What about you?" He asked, wanting to ask him more questions; the usual stuff such as how long he has been working here, where he came from, etc etc. Yes, George was perhaps a little too excited.

Chase smiled as George said he was a surgical intern. He remembered those days, he wouldnt want to go back there for anything. He was glad to no longer be the new man there. "I've already finished a surgical residency, so all I can tell you is hang in there, it gets better" Chase told him.
"Right now I'm working mostly in the ICU, I'm a cardiac intensivist, I do some of the critical care surgeries now...you should scrub in with me sometime, they're exciting" Chase said, always enjoying having interns and residents he could help teach. Most of the interns worked with general surgery, so he usually didnt get to see them as much as some of the other surgeons did unless he specifically requested them. Other doctors in his department preferred to stay away from the interns, but he liked it.

George nodded appreciatively as he told him to hang in there. "Thanks...it seems impossible some days. But I guess you know all about that," he said smiling, still grateful for the man's advice. His smile widened, forming into an even more excited grin as he felt his feelings of exhaustion slowly start to disappear.
"Really?! You would let me scrub in?!" He exclaimed, shocked and thrilled at the same time. "I bet they are exciting! I'm excited just thinking about it! I mean...its not exciting that someone got hurt so that they need a surgery," George quickly added, not wanting him to think he liked people getting hurt. "But...thank you for the opportunity to learn more. I have never met someone in your specific field before who has offered me a chance like this to learn."

"I think more days than not it seems impossible when you're an intern...but it will get better, you just have to stick it out long enough to get to the not as impossible part" Chase told him, hoping he didnt seem like a jerk for giving so much advice to this guy he didnt know when he hadnt even asked for it.
Chase smiled as he watched George's excitement after he offered to let him scrub in. It was an excitement Chase sometimes forgot now as an attending, the excitement just to be in the OR. When you're an intern you do anything to get in there, but when you become a resident or attending, you get more used to it, you're there more regularly. "Sure, if you're interested you're welcome to. Its a teaching hospital so you should be able to get the opportunity to learn whenever you want"

"I hope your right," George told him, hoping it didn't sound rude for him to doubt this doctor. There were just moments where he would question whether he chose the right profession or not, and it worried him. "Sometimes its hard...and certain things make you doubt whether this is the right job to do." He hoped he was making sense, he had a tendency to rAMble at times, so hopefully this wasn't one of those times.
"I'm definitely interested!" He said eagerly. Interns were eager, that wasn't something unheard of. Perhaps he should control his excitement though; he wanted to remain professional. "Some doctors feel differently...some don't want to deal with interns, but I'm glad that you're giving me this chance, and thanks!" George didn't want to sound like he was trying to talk Chase out of letting him scrub in a surgery, so he didn't go into details. "How long have you been working here for?"

"You'll get through it, try to keep motivated somehow and it'll make it easier. Its good that you're still excited by it" Chase told him. He hoped he didnt sound like he was preaching to George. He had seen many interns give up and hoped that didnt happen to George.
"You're welcome" Chase responded with a smile hearing George say how much he wanted to scrub in. "I'll talk to your resident and arrange to have you get in on a surgery." He told him knowing it would be no problem for him being an attending. "I did my residency here, been here ever since"
