Natalie sat in her chair, reading over the questions she was going to ask her next patient (even though he worked at the hospital) for his first psychiatric evaluation. It was necessary for everyone to have one at some point, and although she had never met Dmitri before, she had heards things about him and besides the rumours, he worked at the morgue; someone working there, well...she had heard stories in the past about doctors like that, and how all the death had effected him, so a psychiatric evaluation was necessary for this particular doctor. She glanced at the clock...he would be here any minute, and she was a little nervous. She was still only a resident, even though after one more year, she wouldn't be anymore, and so whenever she had a patient without her superior present, she was both nervous and excited. She waited patiently for his arrival, still reading over the questions, even though she had already memorized them. [post Dmitri ]

As requested (nay, demanded), Dr. Karloff had left his comfortable hang-out in the morgue in order to venture into the land of the living and undergo some sort of psychiatric evaluation. Somehow, when he entered the room, he did not immediately recognize the redheaded doctor who was preparing to deliver whatever was delivered in these evaluations. (Dimitri assumed it would be only verbal questions, but he was not ruling out the possibility that she might want to run a cat-scan or a blood test or hook him up to a lie-detector or something.) Seeing as how he did not know this woman, it was only proper to begin introductions!
Pulling his face into a broad grin, Dimitri came forward quickly, with his hand extended. Whether or not Natalie was ready for him, the Russian took her hand in his own and clapped her shoulder with his left hand as he gave her a robust handshake. In a loud and eager voice, Dimitri said "Zdrastvuyte! I am Dr. Dimitri Karloff. You are to give me head-exam? I am not crazy! Ha ha. There, now ve are done. . .and I go. Da svidaniya!"
With that, he promptly made as if he was about to walk right out the door as quickly as he had come in.

Natalie smiled as he came in and stood up so that they would be properly introduced, but the next thing she knew, he was shaking her hand and sputtering off in a foreign language, and ..was leaving. "Um..Dr Karloff," she called after him, wondering if she would have to follow him or if he would stop at the sound of her voice.
"Psych evaluations are routine and compulsory, so I'm afraid you are going to have to stay until we're done." She hadn't expected him to leave seconds after he came...so she didn't know what he was going to do, and whether she was going to need help convincing him to stay or not. "I'm Doctor Natalie Cooper...please have a seat," she said in a friendly voice, not wanting to get on his bad side since she told him that he didn't have a choice in this matter.

Really, Dimitri hadn't thought that he would get away with just shaking the Doctor's hand and walking out the door, but it has still been worth a shot, right? When Dr. Cooper called after him, the Russian stopped in the doorway, but he was seriously considering ducking out and making a run for it down the hall. But what would that accomplish? Maybe it was time to cut Natalie a little slack. After all, she had given a friendly response and used the word 'please.'
Well, alright. That was enough to make Dimitri behave (for now.) Slowly, he turned and came back into the room, sitting where Dr. Cooper had indicated. For a moment, he just looked at her, as if trying to draw an opinion of her based upon her outward appearance (maybe he was trying to guess at her brain-weight.)
Taking a breath, Dr. Karloff asked "Vhy is compulsory? Vhy you think I need head-exam? I look crazy to you?"

She breathed a sigh of relief when he moved away from the door and took a seat. At least he was cooperating so far...and this made her optimistic that the evaluation would run smoothly, and that there would be no trouble. "No one is saying you are crazy Doctor Karloff...as I said, this is just procedure, and everyone must undergo a psychiatric evaluation at some point. We just want to make sure you are okay, but again...no one is saying you are insane. We just need to make sure that nothing is troubling you."
She looked down at her sheet, and read over the questions one more time, before commencing. "Please say your name and your occupation." She was aware that he had already introduced himself, but she needed to ask this question, as it was the first one asked during an evaluation.

The fact that Dr. Cooper kept repeating that nobody thought he was crazy only made Dimitri a little more suspicious that someone thought he was crazy! Of course, perhaps Natalie wasn't that someone. After all, she seemed like a very by-the-book kind of person to Dimitri, though he hadn't had very long to make an assessment of her. However, as to her claim that everyone had to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, Dimitri wasn't going to buy that one at all. Dr. Karloff almost told her outright that nothing was troubling him, but figured the woman would still insist on doing her evaluations anyhow, so he thought better of it.
When she asked the first question, Dimitri gave a theatrical eye-roll and replied, "Saint Nicholas and I brink toys to the children at Christmas-time."
He wasn't trying to be rude, really. It just. . .sort of happened sometimes.

She looked at him and smiled when he gave his sarcastic answer. It was understandable that he didn’t want to be here...understandable and obvious. "Really? That’s rather nice of you!" She could be sarcastic too, but she wouldn't do it in a rude way. A rude psychiatrist was not at all a good thing, and it prevented people from opening up to them...so she tried to remain as polite as possible.
"I know you do not want to be here, but the sooner you give me your answers, the sooner you will be able to leave," she said, still smiling at the Doctor.

Dimitri was a bit unsure what to think about that grin on Natalie's face, and he was very surprised at her response to his sarcasm. Absent-mindedly, he wondered how long it would take for constant sarcasm to frustrate Dr. Cooper into giving up and telling him to leave. A long time, he guessed.
Deciding to go ahead and cooperate (for a limited time only), Dimitri sighed and said "Dr. Dimitri Anton Karloff. I am Chief Medical Examiner and Coroner. --But you think I am very funny, da? I answer your qvuestion, you answer mine. Is very fair, I think."

She pondered the question, and figured that if it was going to help this examination continue with minimal arguing, then she would go for it. "Alright, I think that sounds okay." She hoped he didn't plan to ask anything too personal; she wasn't used to talking about certain things with people (especially people she just met, and therefore barley knew). She wrote down his answer to her question and looked up at him, ready to answer his.
"Yes, I do. You seem like you have a good sense of humour." She looked back down at her sheet, preparing to ask him the next question. "How long have you been working at Seattle Grace Hospital?" Once again, testing his memory and making sure he did have a concept of time.

Dimitri grinned as Natalie said she did think he was funny. Ha. He knew he was funny all along. However, he wasn't all that sure that Dr. Cooper was just saying that to be nice. Casually, he said, "Ah, but you did not laugh. I have to be more funny, I think."
When the psychiatrist asked her next question, Dimitri paused. Pressing his eyebrows together and looking at a high place on the wall somewhere, he said, "eeehhhh. . . " This question was a little harder and he had to think about it. Dr. Karloff's lips moved as if he was silently speaking to himself and his head bobbed from side to side a little as he ran through a mental time-line. Suddenly, Dimitri's eyebrows jerked up and he looked back at Natalie replying, "Eight years! And y-ou?"

Ironically, his statement saying that he didn't laugh, made her laugh. She just thought it was funny that he was determined to be more funny so that she would. She scribbled down his answer to her question. "Wow...8 years. Thats quite a long time. And how do you find your job?" She realized that she had agreed to answer his questions too, so quickly added her answer.
"I have been working here for three years now; this is my fourth, and final year, of my residency."

Dimitri grinned at her laugh, also finding it ironic that she had laughed at the statement that he had wanted her to laugh. "Eight years is not so lonk if you like your job. And I like my job! I have very much good time here -- and at my other job also. Veeeery fulfillink."
When Natalie said that she was on her final year of her residency, Dimitri quickly replied, "Oh! Congratulations! . . .Oh vait. Does this mean this vill be your last year here at Seattle Grace? You are leavink us or stayink?"

"Your other job?" She asked curiously, as she wrote down his response to her previous question. "Wow...eight years is a long time, but your right, as long as you enjoy it, then time certainly does fly," she said smiling. She thought it was a little funny that she was also getting asked questions, and would have to ask Julianna if this was common.
"Thank you very much! If I get offered a full time job here, then yes, I do hope to stay. If not, I will have to look elsewhere." She she hope she was offered a job here. She had gotten so comfortable to being here and loved her boss, and the people at Seattle Grace, not to mention Seattle itself.

"Other job," Dimitri repeated, "I am teachink Pathology at University of Vashinkton on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Y-es, time is alvays flyink. I agree!"
He enjoyed talking about his work because Dr. Karloff's work was most definitely his passion. Back on the topic of Natalie, Dimitri said, "I hope you get offered full time job, then! -- But if you leave, maybe I vill not be made to have psych evaluation, yes?"

"Oohh," Natalie said as she wrote that down. "That sounds quite interesting...and do you like that job? I take it you must if you are still working there." She hoped she was asking the right questions. She had gone over the notes of the proper procedure millions of times, so she only hoped she did not disappoint her attending.
She smiled as he said that he hoped she would stay, but if she left, would he still have to do this. "I hope I am able to as well. However, if I do by chance leave, it just means another doctor would give you this evaluation. Its just procedure Doctor Karloff; its not meant to be taken personally," she said still smiling.
